Fear and Humiliation as Motivators

Posted May 31, 2009 – 1:15 pm in: Journal

I splurged Friday night.  I bought a pair of Keen Springwater biking shoes and a set of CrankBrothers Candy C pedals.  I also bought a Serfas RX-921 saddle. These things have been on my wish list for quite a while. I hoped they would make my biking more pleasurable.
I installed all items on Saturday morning. [...]

Resistance

Posted May 29, 2009 – 6:01 am in: Journal

I struggled last night on my bicycle.  I admit I was a little fatigued before starting out, but I never expected to have such a difficult time pedaling that machine.  It was not only difficult on the inclines and against the wind, but I couldn’t even work up any speed on the straightaways and with [...]

A Coincidence

Posted May 28, 2009 – 5:27 am in: Journal

My brother’s name is Brent.  He is two and a half years younger than I am.  When we were very young, some people mistook us for twins, especially upon hearing our names –  Bruce and Brent.
I lived in Milwaukee for a year or so a number of years ago.  Brent and a mutual friend, Rick, [...]

18 Miler

Posted May 26, 2009 – 8:52 pm in: Journal

I spent an hour and a half riding my bicycle yesterday.   I rode approximately 18 miles.  There were plenty of hills on my route, and I worked hard much of the way.  Some of the route included roads and streets, some designated hiking/biking trails.  Bass, the county road that I must use if I [...]

County fairs, pandemics, world wars, catastrophic conflagrations. How can all these things come together in one climactic week in Warsaw, Indiana?

Sonny

Posted May 18, 2009 – 9:21 pm in: Journal

While visiting in South Bend on Sunday, I had a chance to look through the South Bend Tribune.  I checked out the obituaries (as I generally do when reading that paper) to see if I knew anyone who had recently passed.  I was dumbfounded to see the obituary of my friend Dennis James Perry of [...]

Song of the Universe

Posted May 14, 2009 – 6:15 am in: Journal

I’ve been reading an article in The New Yorker about current theories on the structure of the Universe.  What we can see and sense of the Universe indicates that is very large (at least in comparison to ourselves) and contains much stuff.  It’s not hard to understand that explaining it all presents a few problems, [...]

On the Bike

Posted May 11, 2009 – 9:46 pm in: Journal

I took my bike to Franke Park at 6 pm and met several bikers who helped me find my way around some of the trails.  I was exhausted after 20 minutes but hung on for another 20 before deciding that I needed lower gears and different shoes.  The low areas were muddy and were difficult [...]

Book Fetishist

Posted May 9, 2009 – 2:32 pm in: Journal

My favorite pastime is the art of book browsing.  I take immense pleasure from wandering through bookshops and libraries, and drifting aimlessly through the aisles.  When a title looks interesting or a cover is intriguing, I stop and pull the book from the shelf to flip through the pages.  I note the quality of the [...]

Response to a Rejection

Posted May 8, 2009 – 9:03 pm in: Journal

The following letter is self explanatory.   It displays my frustration after submitting my poem, Vaporizer, to several publishers simultaneously.  The letter was sent in the early 90’s.
