Blood

Posted September 30, 2009 – 9:29 pm in: Journal

I donated a pint of blood (yes, it was my own!) to the American Red Cross yesterday. They come to my place of employment regularly. It’s pretty easy to give blood this way. Apart from the time spent answering questions and getting drained, it doesn’t take much away from your day.
A young woman named Shanna [...]

Book Update #4

Posted September 28, 2009 – 8:53 pm in: Stillwater

I’m plowing through the book now, reading each line and editing on the fly. I know the story very well (having written and rewritten it so many times) but there is still plenty of opportunity for mistakes and inconsistencies. I must be careful.
I must also be expeditious. I can’t afford to waste time agonizing over [...]

Book Update #3

Posted September 25, 2009 – 9:06 pm in: Stillwater

I solved the problem concerning George’s young age. I made him a couple of years older. I’ll explain what happened.

While writing the original draft, I thought I would show the maturing of George throughout the book. I thought that the best way to do this was to start him off young, say age 12 or [...]

Book Update

Posted September 22, 2009 – 7:56 pm in: Stillwater

I have a problem. In my original draft, I decided that George Belt, the narrator, would have a girlfriend. It seemed like a good idea at the time. George was supposed to be at the end of his 7th year of school when the story begins. He finds his girlfriend the following year.

It sounds OK, [...]

Book Update

Posted September 21, 2009 – 9:40 pm in: Stillwater

I beefed up the confrontation between Ivan and Stephens this morning. I previously had rushed to a conclusion of the scene, but I knew then that it would take more than one disagreement to send Stephens off. He’s unlikable but he’s not stupid.

I’ve given George Belt a job at the local newspaper, something I hadn’t [...]

Book Project

Posted September 21, 2009 – 6:04 am in: Stillwater

I started writing a novel in the early 1990s. It was about basketball in Indiana in its early days, when men and boys and women and girls were just beginning to learn and play the sport. I had researched the sport in that time period by reading hundreds of newspaper articles in libraries in various [...]

Site Structure & General Updates

Posted September 19, 2009 – 8:53 pm in: Journal

Some confusion occurred, as it has in the past, when I posted pieces of fiction after a string of regular journal entries. All posts on my site are identified as belonging to one of four categories. Those categories are History, Journal, Tales, and Verse. This information can be found on my site by following the [...]

A Strange Encounter

Posted September 15, 2009 – 5:38 am in: Tales

I don’t for one minute think anyone will believe this. But it really happened, and it happened just the way I will relate it to you.
Last fall, I entered a small used bookstore in Goshen on a Saturday afternoon. It was raining lightly and the wind was blowing when I walked through the door. I [...]

Road Guide

Posted September 8, 2009 – 9:52 pm in: Journal

What is a road guide? You probably know the answer to that question, or at least think you know the answer. A quick answer might be “the map in my glove box.” Yes, maps are road guides. Maps guide people along roads and attempt to put them on the right roads so they can reach [...]

Names vs. Numbers

Posted September 6, 2009 – 9:22 pm in: Journal

We are so fortunate to have people around who try to make things easier for us. I’m referring, specifically, to those folks who have so vastly improved our lives by giving us road numbers. It’s so much better for the folks living on those roads to have a number rather than a name for an [...]
