Fitness Update

I bought a new toy. No, it’s not a Harley-Davidson. It’s also not a piece of electronics. It’s what you see in the photo.Dumbbells, dummy!

If you need help, I’ll give you a hint. It has something to do with development of the upper body. Yes, you guessed it. It’s a set of adjustable dumbbells. Very good.

What’s nice about these things is that you can adjust the weight of each one by adding or removing weight disks. All you have to do is pull up a knob at the end of each dumbbell and slide it to the appropriate notch. When you slide the knobs to the ends, you have a dumbbell weighing 12.5 pounds. If you slide the knobs as far as they will go to the inside, you’ll drop all the weight discs and have a dumbbell weighing 2.5 pounds. Possible weights with this nifty unit are 2.5, 5, 7.5, 10, and 12.5.

I used these things today for the first time. I adjusted the weight of each to 10 pounds. This weight provides plenty of resistance for me. I’m doing this stuff to strengthen my upper body and improve my posture. Maybe in a year’s time I’ll be using more substantial weights, but I’m not in this regimen to end up looking like Arnold S. in his heyday.  Ten pounds is plenty, and after several repetitions of each exercise I can really feel my muscles work.

I spent 1 hr, 20 min on my elliptical trainer yesterday afternoon. That was a good workout. I must have sweat a gallon and a half. I was famished later on and went to Casa Mare with Barb. I ordered the tilapia dinner and ate EVERYTHING. It was served with roasted vegetables and a mini salad. I also ate nearly an entire loaf of bread. If you have eaten at Casa, you’ll know what a loaf of their bread is: Not big.

Since Monday’s training session with Erin, I worked out twice at home using the exercises she taught me. I can feel muscles now in my arms, shoulders, and back that I was totally unaware of before. The crunches are also bringing to light some issues in my abdomen. I’m not entirely sure, but it seems as if I can see some ripples popping up in my abdominal area. Could be my imagination or maybe some loose skin, but maybe not.

After my upper body work this afternoon, I spent 50 minutes on the elliptical. I always read when I’m using it – magazines such as “The New Yorker” as well as books. I think I’ve read perhaps 10 books and hundreds of magazines over the past few years while pounding away on the elliptical machine.

I believe I’m more alert and I seem to comprehend more when I read while exercising. It’s one of the few times I can actually perform two beneficial activities at once.

Each disk weighs 1.25 pounds.
